How did this Class effect me?

This class has allowed me to test the water with almost every position in filmmaking. The only position I did not have was director and I am completely fine with that. I found out that I did not care for being a producer and that I don’t particularly like making documentaries. I did, though, find out that DP is a field that I would be interesting in learning more about. I really liked working with the camera adjusting the aperture and the focus. I feel like I learned a great deal of information about lighting within the camera and all the functions that go along with it to make your picture look that much better. Finally, I realized for sure that I love editing! This class has made my love of editing grow significantly and I am positive that this is the field I want to focus on and pursue in a career!

Over all I learned that filmmaking is a very very long and tedious process and every small detail matters! The more detailed you are in preplanning the more organized the production and post-production work will be. It makes life so much easier in post-production to have a written set script to use as your guidelines. Also in production having an organized shot list set to the most effective order will help make the shoot run smoothly and will work as a check list to make sure no shots gets left out.

I really enjoyed this class and can’t wait to learn more in future production classes!

Plans for next semester

Well starting in the summer I plan on taking Introduction to editing, 331. with you and 6x1 with Andre in the first session starting May 20th I believe. In the fall I am signed up for both Art 101 and Art 102 to fulfill my intro classes for my minor in Studio Art. I chose this minor because I am really interested in photography and graphic design. This minor will allow me to focus only on those to subjects. I am also signed up for 302 experimental and I am waitlisted for 301. If I get into 301 then I am going to drop 302 with hopes of taking it in the spring. The last class I am waiting to hear about is the DIS with Andre. I was lucky to get into all of my classes with the exception of 301.

Role in the Wild Card

My job in this project is lighting. I don’t have much experience or practice with lighting so I look forward to branching out and hopefully walking away with new knowledge that I can carry on with me throughout my film career. I also had clamed the role of editing but I was told I couldn’t do that L. It will be tough to sit and not edit but I will try! I plan on trying to accomplish the right lighting for the mood of our short film. In the beginning the mood will have to portray just an ordinary day with lots of natural lighting and progress into a more gloomy, sad mood with a more dull and dark lighting environment. We don’t plan on using too much extra lighting for most of our scenes because of the fact that our location already has so many sources of natural light; which is what we are going for!

Editing Sound 3b

Editing the Sound Project 3b was different. It is definitely something I have never done before but I think I enjoyed it. I was working with Sarah on this part of the project. I think we worked well together because we could agree on the same thing and we both had a mutual understanding of how we wanted our piece to sound. We ended up basing our piece of a story line. We wanted it do sound like someone going through a mix of emotions and then in the end we wanted it to ease back out to the calmness that we started with. I think over all we both enjoyed working on this project.  We realized at the end that we did have somewhat of a narrative and that wasn’t what we were supposed to create but as far as sticking to our idea I think we did a good job in sticking to our base line.

Sound Recording

I learned to avoid trying to capture sound outside especially on a windy day…it doesn’t sound good! I really enjoyed hearing what sounds my group came up with. I also learned that the environment really does have an effect on how the sound is recorded; weather it will echo or if other sounds will be picked up as well. We were in a time crunch, which I think affected the amount of creativity we had.
We broke off into two groups. Group one was Jessica, Molly and Kateland and the second group was Me, Thomasina and Molly. My group created a lot of our sounds in the library, which caused us to get a lot of strange looks and questions but we all still had a lot of fun.

Editing the master shot

Editing the master shot was interesting! I liked how we worked in shifts almost. I find it harder to edit when there are more people sitting around just staring at the screen. By working in shifts we all got to put our own creative twist on it. Due to the limited time and space we had when filming it limited our ability to get a wide variety of shots, which limited our options in edition. I think we all looked back and thought of one thing or another that we could have filmed to give us more flexibility but we learned and we still had a good piece.
